Leeds United 2-0 Hull City: Highlights & Report
Leeds United delivered a commanding performance at Elland Road against Hull City, securing a 2-0 victory with two goals in the second half. This win took them into the international break on a high note.
Facing Hull City in their second consecutive Yorkshire derby, Leeds aimed to build on their recent away win against Sheffield Wednesday. Both teams entered the match unbeaten, with Hull drawing their first three games and Leeds having drawn twice and won once.
Manor Solomon made his debut for Leeds, starting on the left wing, while new signings Largie Ramazani and Ao Tanaka were named on the bench.
From the outset, Leeds took the initiative. Solomon quickly formed a promising partnership with Junior Firpo, whose low cross found Willy Gnonto. Although Gnonto’s effort was blocked, it highlighted the early threat Leeds posed.
Around the 20-minute mark, Gnonto thought he had scored when he converted Pascal Struijk’s clever pass. However, his goal was disallowed for offside.
Hull City’s first real opportunity came shortly after when Chris Bedia’s shot was tipped over the bar by Illan Meslier, following a controversial moment where Joe Rodon was seemingly fouled.
As the match approached halftime, clear chances were scarce. Ilia Gruev and Brenden Aaronson tested the Hull defense from distance, while Liam Millar had a couple of attempts for the visitors.
The second half started with both teams unchanged, and the score remained level. Leeds had the first opportunity when Solomon created space on the wing, but Aaronson’s shot was blocked by a packed Hull defense.
The Tigers’ defense proved resilient, with several key blocks, including one from Mateo Joseph’s effort, which required two saves to clear.
Leeds’ persistence paid off just after the hour mark with Mateo Joseph scoring his first goal of the season. Solomon delivered a precise near-post cross, and Joseph’s deft flick secured the lead.
With just under 20 minutes remaining, Daniel Farke made tactical changes, introducing Joel Piroe and Largie Ramazani. The substitutions quickly made an impact, with Ramazani setting up Piroe, whose initial effort was off target.
However, Piroe soon made amends with a well-placed shot to double Leeds’ lead. The move began with Aaronson and Joseph linking up, Firpo finding space on the wing, and Piroe finishing low with his right foot.
In the final moments, further substitutions saw Sam Byram, Joe Rothwell, and Ao Tanaka make their appearances, with Tanaka making his debut.
Leeds United managed the closing stages effectively, holding possession and securing back-to-back victories in Yorkshire derbies, both by a 2-0 scoreline.
