Official: Liam Cooper Joins CSKA Sofia After Decade with Leeds United
CSKA Sofia has made a significant addition to their squad with the signing of Liam Cooper, the former Leeds United captain. The 33-year-old defender, who was a free agent after his contract with Leeds expired at the end of June, has decided to embark on a new chapter in his career with the Bulgarian side.
Cooper’s move marks the end of a distinguished 10-year tenure at Leeds United, where he became an integral part of the club’s history. Over his decade-long spell, Cooper made 263 league appearances and played a crucial role in Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League in 2020. His leadership and dedication were key in guiding the club back to the top flight after a 16-year absence.
In a heartfelt farewell message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Cooper reflected on his time at Leeds United, saying, “To the best in the land. After 10 years, seven as captain, it’s time to say goodbye. I leave the club, proud of what we have achieved together. I was never perfect, but throughout my time I tried to represent you and the club with dignity and modesty at all times.”
Leeds United’s Chief Executive Angus Kinnear praised Cooper as both a “warrior on the pitch and an ambassador off it.” His contributions to the club were widely respected, and his departure marks the end of an era for Leeds.
As Cooper takes on this new challenge with CSKA Sofia, both he and his new club will be eager to see what the future holds. His experience and leadership are expected to make a significant impact as he brings his talents to the Bulgarian top flight.
